What is O&M (operation and maintenance)?

O&M, or operation and maintenance, is the recurring work that keeps a solar system producing what it should: panel cleaning, inverter checks, remote monitoring and electrical inspections. Its cost is part of the project's OPEX and is deducted before distributable profit is calculated.

In 30 seconds

  • O&M keeps production close to what was projected.
  • It covers cleaning, preventive checks, monitoring and repairs.
  • Its cost is part of OPEX and is deducted before distributable profit.
01

Why should you care?

A solar system isn't installed and forgotten. Without maintenance it produces less than it could, year after year.

  • You understand why a project includes an O&M contract from the start.
  • You know which cost is deducted before what is distributed is calculated.
  • You read with judgment a projection that leaves that cost out.
02

Think of it as servicing a car

A car without oil changes or check-ups keeps running for a while, but it uses more fuel and breaks down sooner. A solar system is the same: O&M is the servicing that keeps it performing like day one throughout its useful life.
03

How does O&M work?

  1. 1

    Panel cleaning

Dust and dirt block light; how often depends on the climate and surroundings.

  2. 2

    Preventive checks

Inverters, connections and structure are checked before they fail.

  3. 3

    Remote monitoring

Production is tracked remotely to catch drops early.

  4. 4

    Corrective maintenance

When something fails, it is repaired or replaced to recover production.

04

An example with numbers

As plain arithmetic, unrelated to any project: a 100 kWp system in an area with 4.4 peak sun hours and a performance ratio (PR) of 0.8, with dirty panels losing 5% of production.

An example with O&M
Expected production per day≈ 352 kWh
Loss from soiling (5%)≈ 17.6 kWh per day
Loss in a month≈ 535 kWh
Loss in a year≈ 6,424 kWh

Timely cleaning recovers that energy. O&M pays its way when what it recovers is worth more than it costs.

05

Where do you see it at Circular Urban?

In Circular Urban's solar projects, the O&M contract starts when the system begins feeding energy into the grid, and its cost is part of the project's OPEX. Each project sheet shows who operates and maintains it.

  • Each solar project sheet, in Construction Timeline: the O&M contract starts with grid injection.
  • Each solar project sheet, in Project Team: who operates and maintains the system.
06

What changes in your finances once you get it

You read the full cost

You know a projection without O&M leaves out a cost that will show up.

You value sustained output

Keeping performance year after year matters as much as installing well.

You apply it at home

If you have panels, cleaning and checking them is part of what they produce.

07

Common mistakes

Myth

Solar panels need no maintenance.

In reality

They need little, but not none: cleaning, checks and inverters that get replaced over the years.

Myth

A project without an O&M contract performs better.

In reality

It is a project that hasn't counted that cost yet. Sooner or later it shows up, as an expense or as lower production.

Myth

Remote monitoring replaces site visits.

In reality

It catches problems early, but cleaning and repairs are still on-site work.

08

Test yourself

A system produces 400 kWh a day and soiling takes away 5%. How much energy does it lose per day?

This content is educational. Every participation carries risks inherent to the project, including the possibility of partial or total loss, and results are subject to each project's actual performance.
