What an Energy Community is
The setup that lets neighbours share a solar farm
In one sentence
A group of neighbours and businesses that share the energy of a nearby solar farm, and get their share on the same bill as always.
- No panels on your roof
- No switching electricity company
- No construction or equipment to buy
It has existed in Colombia since 2023 as the Comunidad Energética: created by Ley 2294 (Law 2294) and regulated by Decreto 2236 (Decree 2236).

How it works, in three steps
Tap each step and see what lights up. What never changes are the wires that already reach your home.
Step 1 of 3
A solar farm gets built
On nearby land, not on your roof. The farm plugs into the same power grid that already reaches your home.
What you need to do
Nothing. The construction happens far from your home.
What changes for you, and what doesn't
Stays the same
- Your electricity company
- Your monthly bill
- Your grid connection
- Your home: nothing gets installed
What changes
Your monthly usage splits in two. One part comes from the farm, at the price the community agrees. You keep paying for the rest as you do today.
Illustration. The size of your share is agreed before you join.
Why a farm doesn't fill up all at once
A farm is built in full from the start, because building it in pieces costs more. The community, on the other hand, comes together little by little. Meanwhile, the energy nobody is using yet goes to the grid and gets paid for, so the farm runs from day one.
An illustration of how a community fills up in phases, not figures from a project. Ours is in La Pintada and has 1.48 MW; we'll confirm the available spots before you join.

The words, plainly
Four terms you'll hear when people talk about Energy Communities.
Energy Community
A group of households and businesses that team up to produce energy and share it. Colombian law has recognised it as a Comunidad Energética since 2023.
Solar farm
A plot of land with lots of solar panels that produces energy for many people at once. Like having panels, just far from your roof.
Power grid
The wires that already bring electricity to your home. The farm plugs into that same grid, so nothing new needs to be installed.
Leftover energy
What the farm produces that the community isn't using yet. It goes to the grid and gets paid for, so it isn't wasted. You'll also hear it called surplus energy («excedente»).
What everyone asks
Do I have to install anything at home?
NoThe panels are at the farm, not on your roof. Nothing about your home changes.
Will I lose power when it's cloudy?
NoYou stay connected to the same grid as always. The farm feeds energy into the system and your bill reflects your share.
Do I have to switch electricity company?
NoYou keep the same one and get the same bill.
How much does it cost to join?
No installationThere's no construction work and no equipment to buy, so there's no installation cost. Each community's terms are explained before you sign anything.
Is this legal in Colombia?
YesIt was created by Ley 2294 de 2023 (Law 2294 of 2023) and regulated by Decreto 2236 de 2023 (Decree 2236 of 2023). The Ministry of Mines and Energy keeps a register of communities.
What if I move?
Let us know and we'll check whether there's a farm near your new address. The exit terms are written into the agreement.
